Whether from a deck of playing cards or from an individualised deck, everyone has owned a set. Whether you’ve merely been playing with friends to pass the time or getting your own deck for some quality entertainment, playing with cards can be fun and make you feel good too!

Let’s take card games, which is a favourite pastime of nearly everyone in the world. A multitude of card games are available for players to choose from. One such game is rummy and another is solitaire.

Both these games have been around for a long time, but people often get confused between these two games improperly, leading to fewer potential players in the market.

With over centuries of history, both solitaire and rummy games are considered classics. Both games were prominent in the childhoods of many people, with one game being a go-to social game and the other being at the forefront of computer card games.

Each game of rummy is unique with certain differences. For those who are new to rummy or solitaire, we provide this handy guide. Here are a few major differences between the two games:

No. of Players

  • Rummy: Required Two to six players can play in a game of rummy.
  • Solitaire: Solitaire is a single-player game with online multiplayer options.

No. of card decks and the ranking of cards

Rummy Game: It is played with two standard card decks, one or two jokers, and the ranking of cards in a deck can be found by counting from 2 to 10. The jack of spades (10) is always the highest card, followed by five of spades (9), six of spades (8), eight of clubs (7), etc.

Solitaire : A traditional solitaire game uses 52 playing cards. Simple virtual solitaire decks tend to use a single or two decks of cards consisting of 14. However, there is no joker in the game. The ranking of cards from low to high are ace, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten and jack followed by queen and king.

The End Goal

Rummy : In the Indian version of rummy, each player gets 13 cards. The objective is to form combinations with all 13 cards and declare them aloud. To declare a combination, a player must create two sequences out of which one can be used only once in the game. The person who creates the fewest three hole cards in his turn wins and loses no points. If a player declares without making a pure sequence, he gets penalised 80 points.

Solitaire : Solitaire is a card game whereby the objective is to move all the cards from the tableau columns onto the foundation piles one by one in ascending order of each suit, starting with an ace and ending with a king.

This is how it’s done

Rummy : One example of a typical rummy game is played by two to six players who are seated at a table and each player is dealt 13 cards. The 200+ remaining cards form two piles: the open deck, which is kept at the centre of the table, and the closed deck that increases in size from day-to-day as players collect new cards.

13 card rummy is one of the famous types of rummy you can play and win.

Solitaire : Solitaire – A game that generally has four different piles.

  • Tableau : Tableau game breaks down its layout into seven columns. It displays all cards that are available in the game.
  • Foundation : In a game with up to six players, the foundation piles are four stacks of cards whereby after each hand, certain cards get moved accordingly. At the beginning of the game, these piles generally do not exist.
  • Stockpile: The pile is made up of remaining cards after building the tableau.
  • Talon: Also known as the “waste” pile, the talon consists of cards from the stockpile that do not belong on the tableau or with foundation piles.

The Game’s Mechanics

Rummy : For Rummy, the game moves when one player orders the next. Every player must draw and discard one card at their turn, but they can draw from both the open and closed decks. You can make three or four cards in a single suit, or rank and card of an entirely different suit. With sequences, you pick jokers to swap the deck to create impure sequences. Pure sequences include three or four cards of the same suit but without jokers, while sets include cards in the same standing either aces or tens plus two or more cards in another rank and suit.

Making a valid declaration and winning the game is easy by playing the game and creating one of the following combinations:

  • There are two sequences, one of which is a pure sequence.
  • There are three sequences, one of which is a pure sequence.
  • There are four sequences altogether (including one pure sequence).

You need a pure sequence to make a valid declaration, so make sure you avoid penalty points by having at least one of these before making the declaration.

Solitaire : With a simple game, you can move cards from one column to another column, as long as the destination is one rank higher than the card moved and of an alternate colour. You can move cards in groups if all are in descending order as well. If there’s an empty spot in the tableau, you can only fill it with a king.

While cards can only be moved and placed on the tableau in a limited number, talons are formed by selecting and building three cards. If you cannot play one of these cards, the process of building a talon is repeated by selecting 3 more cards. When there are no more cards remaining in your deck, the talon shuffles to create a new one.

While arranging cards in a tableau and building stacks of cards you also need to build up piles on the foundations. The topmost card from the talon or a completed stack can be placed onto one of the foundation piles according to suit. You win the game once all the cards have been placed on each foundation pile in order of denomination. If you have no more moves left and there are still unfinished foundations, you lose the game.

Conclusion

In a survey conducted, 38 percent of respondents in India stated that rummy is a game with more skill than luck. In contrast, 52 percent of those surveyed disagreed or strongly disagreed that it is a game of chance and 20 percent agreed that games of chance are involved. We believe Indian Rummy is the best card game ever. It is played in a knockout format and there are no suits in the game. All 52 cards are used in a two player game.
